Have you ever heard of Pokémon GO, Google Street View, or Snapchat filters? Well, they are all examples of augmented reality or AR. Keep in mind that AR isn’t just about fun & games or filters. It can create unique, immersive experiences. It was Ivan Sutherland, a Harvard University computer scientist in 1968, who was the first one to create a head-mounted display known as “The Sword of Damocles.

It took around two decades for AR to establish its space in the public eye but in 2011 & 2013, big companies like Disney, Coca-Cola, & National Geographic started using AR for their events & in public places like malls & Times Square. Then, in 2014, Google introduced Google Glass. It was the first widely available wearable AR device. Interestingly, with Google Glass, you can easily access digital information just by nodding your head.

Did you know that 187 million people were using the Pokémon GO game (made on AR) at the end of 2017? It is also expected AR & VR will boost the global GDP by $1.5 trillion in 2030. But let’s talk about the AR applications in some parts of our lives.

Many multinational companies such as Pepsi, TopShop, & IKEA are widely using AR in their brand marketing. They also try their products to customers before they go on to purchase.

I am excited about this feature of AR. Imagine going to the Airports, Malls & Historic Places & without feeling the need for a navigator, you can just take out your phone & navigate your way through the place.
